Ed's story

It is 1999. My son said; hey, you are turning into an old man. I was 59 at the time. I went to a liver specialist. He said, you have hep-c, final stages, your only hope is a transplant, get on the list now, you have between 2 months and 2 years left. By the way, he said, what do you take now.

I said I have been on alternative stuff for years. He said, that is your problem, your relationship with me depends on you getting off all those things, right now. I did. In several weeks I was in the hospital, headed toward death like he said. I told my wife, I will get back on my alternative stuff and add to it and see what happens.

I had been on the internet and learned a lot. Guess what, I got most of my life back. Well, the doctors at Duke started trying to get me to try the peg interferon treatment. I played games with them for two years to put it off and still stay on their list. Finally they said, hey, you are now in such good shape, you are an excellent candidate for the treatment. I finally agreed. The nightmare started. My viral load went from 5 million down to 38000 but I was a zombie, lost most of my mind, lost muscle tissue, etc.

After 6 months the doctor said lets take you off, you are going down. I said, let me go a little longer. This happened twice. He then said again I needed to get off. I said I will take it until I am 3 seconds from death if it will work. He said, you are within 3 seconds now and I refuse to let you kill yourself. OK, now we are back to alternative stuff. Been back for a year and have most of my life back except for muscle problems, headaches, twitching of fingers, memory problems, balance problems, etc. However, I am alive and will be here for many years to come and hope to see my grandchildren have grandchildren. Most important of all. All the praise goes to our Creator and Saviour who makes all things possible.
